Northwoods Academy will celebrate Georgia Pre-K Week (October 3-7) with a visit from state Rep. Allen Peake on Tuesday, October 4, at 9:30 a.m. While there, Rep. Peake will participate in a reading activity with students, tour the facility, talk with the staff, and get an up-close look at the many ways the center is supporting early learning.
“All of Bibb County’s boys and girls need a firm foundation for their future education and Pre-K is where it starts for many of them,” said Dr. Erin Weaver, the District’s Director of Early Childhood Education. “Every experience in Pre-K is designed to broaden their knowledge and pique their curiosity.”
Georgia Pre-K Week is the first-ever event of its kind, hosted by Voices for Georgia’s Children (www.georgiavoices.org) and its partners to celebrate the important work being done to get students ready for school success in the 3,909 Pre-K classrooms across the state. Legislators have been invited to take part in the celebration so they may witness first-hand the quality education Georgia students are receiving in lottery-funded Pre-Ks.
Rep. Peake is just one of many special guests who will be visiting the District’s Pre-K classrooms during the week. All guests have been given a book to read to the students, which will be left behind as a donation to the classroom. Rep. Peake will be reading Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes.
“The day they enter Pre-K, our children are taking steps toward their graduation, ” Weaver said.
Northwoods Academy is located at 709 Pierce Avenue. For more information, contact Dr. Erin Weaver, the District’s Director of Early Childhood Education, at (478) 779-3204.
About Voices for Georgia’s Children
Established in 2003, Voices for Georgia’s Children (www.georgiavoices.org) is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the well-being of children and youth across the state and inspires Georgians – both legislators and everyday citizens – to act on their behalf. The organization provides the necessary research-based information, measures, collective voice and proposed legislation to help guide these decision-makers in the right direction – that is, supporting policies that ensure Georgia’s children grow up safe, healthy, educated, connected to their family and community, and employable.
About “Pete the Cat”
Voices for Georgia’s Children is proud to have “Pete the Cat” as the honorary mascot for Pre-K Week. “Pete the Cat” (www.peterthecat.com) is the creation of Georgia artist James Dean who illustrated the book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, which was written by Georgia children’s author Eric Litwin. Through the generosity of Dean, Litwin, HarperCollins Publishers and Decatur’s Little Shop of Stories bookstore, Voices for Georgia’s Children was able to provide copies of Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes to all legislators for their use in reading to Pre-K students across the state.
